You need inner peace, and peace takes place within you. That means that you don’t have to have the one hundred percent peace which you fantasized about. You will need something much more subtle and more real than this. But how do you have peace within this material world, anyway? Your reality has challenges, and those challenges aren’t likely to go away. But you can confront them, and you are given a hint by that. Initially, you might actually feel some moments of tension, anxiety, despair, or some other natural reaction when you face your challenges. But here’s the key to understanding this in a new level of awareness…

You’ve got the choice to be aware of your response. There is an amazing power in noticing your response. You do not need to have stuck in your own response, although you can observe this emotional reaction. And you do not need to fight your response, either. So if you are not aggressively fighting with it, and if you are not enmeshed in your response, then where can the internal peace come out of?

Peace isn’t the all-encompassing bliss-out state that many envision. Real inner peace is lively and living. Peace, as you’re coming to understand it, co-exists on this world. Peacefulness is the ability to be current in almost any situation, while being present together with your reply to the situation. For instance: If you’re currently focusing on your own work, and there’s a sound of a lawnmower outside , how is that going to influence your consciousness? Is the sound distracting? It is distracting. However, is the noise currently preventing you? Ah ha, the sound really is a challenge, but it isn’t currently preventing you from functioning. But what is keeping you?

The element affecting your inner condition is not the sound of the lawnmower. Yes, the sound is slightly bothersome, but it isn’t totally distracting. But if the sound is not the issue, then what’s the matter? The irritant is the response to the lawnmower sound. Your response that troubles you is your own voice. Your inner voice is saying something about the lawnmower that is bothersome. And what’s more, your voice is currently insisting that before the sound goes, you can’t work. Let us look at this, since the moment you recognize your inner self talk, that’s the second that you become to peace.

Your voice is speaking mechanically. It is commenting on your reality. Some of yourself talk is helpful, but much of it is reactive responses out of your ego, and these dramatic or psychological answers are especially unhelpful. To understand how to respond to your self talk needs understanding something about the art of being focused.

The person that is centered is able to detect their self discussion. They do not give in to it, although they don’t deny their talk. A power is in your being able to listen to yourself talk. It is this: After you hear without getting wrapped up in the words the inner voice feels satisfied that it has shared its issues. You have listened to its dire warnings and it’s pleased with this.

You recognize the goal of the ego voice. It is trying to help you a course in miracles, but in its somewhat childlike, dramatic manner. If you refused the existence of this voice that is remarkable and what would happen? That’s known as denial, and it generates another problem, as to successfully avoid your voice, you have to suppress your aliveness. Suppressing your consciousness actually takes a great deal of energy, and that is devitalizing — and it is obviously not peaceful.

This really is a paradox — it requires being present to your inner self talk, but not taking it seriously if you need inner peace. And if you believed that peace was something that you would attain if your voice could be completely blocked by you, think again. People try to block their self talk with drugs or alcohol. It does not work, and it has side effects. So you can have peace that is authentic, but you’ve redefined it. You realize that internal peace isn’t some blissful state of ignorance about the world. Inner peace is your capacity to detect your response to encounter something, and to continue breathing and doing anything you’re doing.

The very first time your voice may remind one that you feel stressed, and so this approach isn’t currently working. Great try self voice, but not clever enough. The shift to peace within comes from your being prepared to research this procedure you do not get instant results that are total. You cultivate the ability to explore levels of peace from moment to moment.
